Tell your MEP: protect Albania's nature

Albania aims to close its environment chapter in the second half of 2027. Before it does, the harmful parts of its 2024 Protected Areas Law need to be repealed. Members of the European Parliament follow Albania's accession closely, and a message from someone they represent can make a difference.

It takes about five minutes.

Subject: Please help protect Albania's national parks and wetlands

Dear [MEP name], I am writing as someone you represent in [your country] about the protection of nature in Albania, a candidate for EU membership. In 2024, Albania changed its Protected Areas Law to allow construction, tourism and infrastructure inside its national parks, wetlands and protected coasts. At the Vjosa delta near Narta, one of the most valuable coastal wetlands in the Mediterranean and home to more than 2,300 species, early construction has already damaged dunes, pine forest and lagoon. The works are paused, but the law is still in force. In its 2026 report on Albania, the European Commission found that these changes have contributed to weaker nature protection, and set the second half of 2027 as the target for closing Albania's environment chapter (Chapter 27). Before that chapter closes, I ask you to: 1. Support the repeal of the harmful provisions of Albania's 2024 Protected Areas Law. 2. Call for effective protection of Albania's protected areas to be restored and shown to work in practice. 3. Raise the Vjosa delta in your work on Albania's accession. A strong European future for Albania should include strong protection for its nature. I would be grateful to hear what steps you will take. Kind regards, [Your name] [Your town and country]
