Standing Up for Albania's Coast
Communities across Albania are defending their coastlines, protected areas, and environmental rights. We stand with them.
From Zvërnec to Rrjoll, citizens, local residents, and environmental defenders gathered in Tirana to protest development plans threatening protected coastal landscapes, including the Vjosa–Narta ecosystem and Pishë Poro–Narta. Their message was clear: decisions affecting protected areas must be grounded in transparency, science, and meaningful public participation.
The Vjosa–Narta region is one of Europe's most important coastal ecosystems — home to wetlands, lagoons, migratory birds, flamingos, pelicans, and hundreds of protected species. Environmental groups, scientists, and communities have raised serious concerns about planned developments and their potential impacts on these sensitive habitats.
A petition launched calls for a suspension of construction in ecologically sensitive areas pending independent environmental assessments, full transparency on permits and studies, meaningful consultation with communities and scientists, and protection of internationally important biodiversity in the Vjosa–Narta landscape.
Protected areas are not empty spaces waiting for development. They are ecosystems, livelihoods, cultural heritage, and public goods. Through Park, our Protected Areas Litigation Hub, AllRise works to ensure they are treated as such.
